What’s for dessert? It is a common question that I get in my house, because who doesn’t love a sweet treat after dinner. My children love yogurt, so I thought it could serve as the foundation for a gut-friendly, yet satisfying treat. Yogurt is a fermented food made from milk. When yogurt is fermented, a type of bacteria called lactic-acid bacteria grow on the sugar and other nutrients in milk. As the bacteria multiply, they produce beneficial compounds that give yogurt it’s unique flavor and texture. There are SO MANY different types of yogurt in the market today. I enjoy a variety of yougurts including Icelandic Skyr yogurt, as well as a plain, Greek Yogurt. Yogurt is home to a variety of probiotics and contains key nutrients that are desirable for children such as high-quality protein and Calcium. Fueling your children with yogurt is a wonderful way to support their guts and provide them with a nutrient-dense option that can work as part of a main meal, snack or in this case, a dessert. Enjoy!
